In 1847 a few Toledo
colored persons, among them fugitives from slavery formed a struggling but
enthusiastic little congregation. The Founders consisted of 23 members. The
founding of the church grew out a need to have their own place to worship.
At that time there was no Erie Street. It was located at lot number 17, and there was no other colored churches in northwestern Ohio. Toledo’s colored community, numbering less than 330 persons, was in the vicinity of what is now courthouse square.
Toledo
was a missionary area to National Negro church but religious members of the
race wanted their own place to worship.
A
colored minister, the Rev.Henry J. Young came here via the famous
Underground railroad, and through his friendship with congressman James
M.Ashley rented a frame building at the southwest corner of summit and Adams
Streets. There a congregation of 23 assembled/The colored church was the
first in northwestern Ohio, second in the state and third west of the
Alleghenies. It grew but for five years the church was nameless.
1847
was the beginning of the oldest Black Institution in Northwest Ohio. The
Congregation was established as part of Sandusky Circuit. Services were held
in a frame building located on
the southwest corner of Adams and summit Streets. There is a historic marker
at the site.
In 1852
the membership increased and Institution was renamed “the Toledo
Circuit”. In 1866 the name was changed from the Toledo church to Warren
church in honor of the Reverend Charles W Penn. In 1890 the Church moved to
15 Erie Street. The Church advanced and was remodeled. Mortgage burned in
1910. IN 1950 moved to 749 Norwood Avenue. IN 1987 a site at 915 Collingwood
was purchased. A commitment to build a new church was made. The land was
dedicated October 29, 1988. Ground breaking ceremony May 3,1992, and
Subsequent beginning of construction began. The new facility located at 915
Collingwood consists of a fellowship hall, educational wing and a sanctuary.
The facility was dedicated on September 19,1993.
